Innovative Design for Urban Mobility

Stockholm’s transport landscape evolved significantly with the 2017 addition of the Citybanan rail line. The pivotal Station City Stockholm, nestled at the Vasagatan and Klarabergsgatan intersection, emerges as the largest transit hub, seamlessly connecting all metro lines and providing underground access to the central station. This architectural gem is not just a transit point but a sustainable beacon for both residents and visitors, blending diverse urban functionalities into one cohesive structure.

Station City Stockholm reimagines the concept of a station, stretching beyond its traditional confines. The design incorporates an above-ground structure that mirrors the underground tunnel network, offering commuters an engaging journey through escalators and lifts. This path is dotted with diverse amenities, including a gym, spa, swimming pool, and a conference centre, culminating in a sky café with a panoramic view of Stockholm. In winter, the rooftop transforms into a public ice rink, enhancing the station’s community integration.

A Symphony of Sustainability and Art

The station’s design is a masterclass in efficiency and sustainability, setting new benchmarks in energy consumption for Swedish buildings. Its innovative use of heat, generated from pedestrian traffic and repurposed across various facilities, embodies a forward-thinking approach to environmental stewardship. Station City Stockholm stands as a model of 21st-century sustainable architecture, merging functionality with environmental consciousness.

Adding to the station’s allure is a captivating art installation by local artist Karin Lindh, influenced by Stockholm’s rich tradition of public art in metro stations. When Stockholm announced an open competition to create an art installation for the new commuter train station, local artist Karin Lindh was eager to apply. "I travel with the subway and I am very fond of these different stations". For the artist, the architectural drawings for the new Station City were equivalent to grand cathedrals.

Crisp Design Calls for Installation Flexibility

With that in mind, Lindh found inspiration in different cathedrals; one of them was the Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome, where she came across Bernini's sculpture, the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. "Bernini skillfully worked with daylight, architecture and sculpture" says Lindh. "I wanted to play with daylight in a similar way, but perhaps a little crisper and less baroque".

Creating the new entrance to the train station was a challenge. Lindh's artistic vision called for a rippling, pleated fabric, draping the ceiling of the 200 m2 mezzanine. After testing various materials the team chose the versatile Rockfon® Mono® Acoustic panels, striking a balance between aesthetic appeal and acoustic excellence. "The panels are flexible and can be bent, creating both sharp and soft bends" says Thomas Svensen from TS Akustik.

This installation, draped across the station's mezzanine, not only enhances the visual experience but also addresses the acoustic needs of a space frequented by thousands daily. Station City Stockholm stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of functional architecture and artistic expression.
