The Acoustical Challenges Prior to Renovation

The journey to transform the Créagora building into an oasis of tranquility started with architect Didier Géronnez, who faced an architectural and acoustic conundrum. "As a client, we were confronted with two major challenges in this project: the sloping terrain and the motorway, the noise of which is amplified when it rains."

But the Créagora project is more than just architecture; it embodies a philosophy. As Didier Géronnez elaborates, "The idea was to create a research, development, and innovation environment where various actors with common interests and addressing challenges of aging can meet, collaborate and exchange valuable information."

To bring this philosophy to life, the architects designed a "vertical street," a sweeping architectural marvel that also posed significant acoustic challenges. This unique staircase, which almost covers the entire height of the building, encourages circulation and chance meetings.

Transforming Noise to Tranquility

To begin, an acoustic engineer at AVEA consulting embarked on a comprehensive study, monitoring sound levels for fifteen days using sound meters. The findings were revealing, with noise levels at times peaking at 85 dB, exceeding recommended exposure limits for human hearing. Armed with this data, the architects at Atelier 4D and Atelier d'Architecture Ad'A formulated a plan. "

The building's design took a rigid north-south orientation, preserving the surrounding green environment and minimizing noise infiltration. "Silence. You immediately notice it when you enter the Créagora building," a pleasant, all-embracing silence. The secret lies in the 3,000 m² of Rockfon Tropic acoustic ceiling tiles that grace all floors together with Rockfon® Mono® Acoustic tackling the unique challenge posed by the building’s full-height stairwell, creating a visual "wow-effect" with its seamless ceiling design.

The Science of Silence

This careful acoustic planning, combined with sound-absorbing furniture custom-developed based on the acoustic engineer's specifications, ensures effective communication and enhances the overall customer experience.

"Inside the building, conversations do not disturb others. In meeting rooms, you only notice the slight buzz of ventilation, and you cannot hear the large training session being delivered in the adjoining meeting room separated by movable walls," proudly remarks Didier Géronnez. The success of the acoustic design has made their meeting rooms highly sought after by companies.

Even the bustling restaurant maintains the same acoustic quality as the rest of the building. "Despite the non-acoustic glazed floor tiles and the sound of plates and cutlery, conversations between employees in the restaurant have the same acoustic climate as the rest of the building," thanks to Rockfon acoustic solutions.
